Extract of excellent feature set during the Great Fire of London. London Bridge on fire. People flee the flames.
Two hysterical women, each carried out by a courtier. First one wriggles in courtier's arms, the second passes out. Each is deposited in a waiting horse-drawn carriage. Second courtier keeps carriage door open and stands to attention. Laughing (drunk?) King staggers into swaying carriage. Courtier swiftly pulls up carriage steps and closes door, signalling to driver. Carriage moves off. Courtiers rush back.
Interior. Cavalier rushes in on another cavalier for a swordfight. But the swordfight between the two cavaliers is immediately broken up by two courtiers who pull away one of the contestants, protesting. The other remonstrates with an angry woman who has entered the room. Further remonstrations. Coach drawn by horses, with soldiers on horseback directly behind. Coach comes to halt.
Title: 'A MESSAGE FROM THE LORD MAYOR OF LONDON - THE KING IS IMPLORED TO RETURN'.
Man on horseback arrives and dismounts, wildly gesticulating at side of coach. King leans out of coach window.
Title: 'THE BURNING OF OLD LONDON BRIDGE - THE FIRE RAPIDLY DEMOLISHES THE ANCIENT WOODEN HOUSES'.
Row of houses overlooking river fully ablaze.
Title: 'THE TERRIFIED INHABITANTS ENDEAVOUR TO ESCAPE BY WATER'.
Crowds plunge into the river (?) amid the thick smoke. The houses still ablaze. Figure climbing ladder up side of house is handed a small child at the window. Engulfed by smoke. Figures (looters?) carry out large vat, others take out rescued chairs. Charred timbers fall amid consuming fire and smoke. As people flee, a woman struggles to her doorway but is overwhelmed by smoke. Fleeing cavalier stops to help her to her feet and whisks her away.
Title: 'THE DEATH OF THE ENTHUSIAST'.
Amid smouldering embers, wailing figure finally leaps into the conflagration. Big puff of smoke. People run past bare framework of building. Procession of men and women fleeing down a narrow passageway, brushing debris aside. A figure throws a bundle (a child?) from a first floor window. Woman at the end is caught and falls. The King anxiously observes from steps of his horse drawn carriage.
