Synopsis:

Educational film about overlapping waves and the resulting wave. Experiments and animated demonstrations / explanations of the physical laws.
Part 1:
- Reflection at the fast end
Experiment: reflection of waves on a long spring that is fixed to a block of wood.
Animation in slow motion of the reflection.
- Reflection at the loose end
Experiment: reflection of waves on a long spring with a loose end.
Animation in slow motion of the reflection.
- The standing wave
Experiment: Two men moving a long spring on the floor thus creating a standing wave.
The standing wave in slow motion.
Animation in slow motion of the overlapping waves and the resulting standing wave.
Animated demonstration that the phases of the overlapping waves and the standing wave are the same.
Animated demonstration that the height of the standing wave is the sum of the two overlapping waves.
Part 2:
- Waves with the same phase that run equal.
Experiment: one long and two shorter springs are joined together forming the shape of a Y. A wave running through each of the shorter springs separately keeps its phase when reaching the long spring.
Animated demonstration of the same physical process.
Experiment: Waves run through the two shorter springs at the same time.
Animated demonstration of the same physical process: The phase stays the same, and the heights of the waves add up.
- Waves with different phases that run equal.
Animated demonstration that the height of the resulting wave is the sum of the heights of the overlapping waves in every single point.
