Farming post world war two asnd efficiency methods are examined including the water supply 1950's
It first identifies the need for improved water supplies on farms and then describes the processes whereby various grades of water pipe are manufactured and installed. It is aimed at an agricultural market, stressing the ease with which their products can be installed and the benefits of doing so, giving figures for water consumption by various types of livestock and setting out the reasons for employing different grades of pipe.
It illustrates a range of environments in 1954 – an agricultural show, agriculture on farms, an analytical laboratory and heavy industrial plant used to manufacture and process steel pipes.

Two men lifting manhole cover set in concrete area between buildings before one man lowers bottle into hole on rope, then pulls the bottle out, full of water, and carefully puts a lid on to it. The man holds the bottle up to the light and both men inspect it. The smartly dressed man writes on the label. A young woman in a white coat, in a laboratory with bottles of chemical around and a row of test tubes in a rack in front of her, lifts a test tube and puts it into a container, a man in a dark suit comes up to her with a paper, as she bends forward to make a note, she then removes the test tube and looks at his papers. Another young woman, in a white coat, carries out a titration using a large pipette on a retort stand, on her left is an array of sample bottles in a rack, behind her are a number of large pipettes on a bench and in the background is a young man also in a white coat, she then stands up and holds a filter paper behind the top of the pipette (to check level ?).
Man in wellington boots uses hand auger to extract soil sample amongst sweet corn plants, placing sample in white sack, he moves to open field alongside sweet corn and takes further samples, removing soil by hand from the auger. Young woman in white coat places wooden racks of sample bottles on tray of machine, then closes lid over them. She tightens thumbscrews to hold down lid, switches on machine, which oscillates backward and forwards to mix the samples thoroughly. A young man in a white coat carries out an electrical test on a sample bottle then dispenses a sample through a funnel, before moving the next sample bottle in the rack into position for testing.

Cut lengths of hot tube are transferred from rollers on to wide belt moving at right angles to rollers, man watches tubes move past. Tube passes through more forming rollers, with cooling spray and much debris flying around. Tube lengths are moved down ramp to cool them. Tubes lifted 2 at a time from ramp by machinery. Tube end shown being lifted into place, clamped and the end ground flat by rotating cutting wheel. Tubes roll down frame, showing bright metal ends. Man in overalls with heavy protective glove holds a tube and marks it with chalk (?), while man in background watches previous process, after marking it he rolls the tube away and rolls the next tube down. Big bundle of pipes is lowered into tank with large chain hoist. Tube rolls down rails into tank, man with check shirt and protective glasses manoeuvres something with poles, mechanical arm pushes pile of tubes under surface in tank. Man in check shirt uses tongs to lift tubes, coated with molten zinc, out of tank into hook and they are pulled away from tank. Tube passes under large rollers, removing excess zinc. Two men grasp a tube with tongs and hold end against nozzle with steam, then move it to one side and reach for next tube. The tubes are shown moving down rails, with two men working at nozzle at top and another checking them at the bottom of the rails. Man in overalls and protective gloves rolls tubes across to another machine. Large rotating machine cuts thread on end of tubes. Two men watch tubes being moved by toothed belt from one machine to another. Man loosely fits metal socket on a tube while machine tightens up socket on previous tube. Farmland with wheat and cleared path. Two farm workers in field, approach small bundle of tubes (20) and carry away one. Trench in field leading to water trough, men approach with tube and lay it beside the trench, with one end placed on block, then walk away. Man standing in muddy trench, unscrewing cap from end of pipe. Two men standing in trench lift pipe from side and lower into trench. Man screws pipe into socket on previously laid pipe. Man in trench turns far end of pipe. Man completes screwing in pipe then uses two pipe wrenches to tighten joint, before painting the joint and pipe wrench grip points with bitumen from a can.
Farm and farmland, with low hill, and sparse hedges between fields. Big caterpillar tractor with metal wheeled “mole” plough attached, two men watch another man look closely at plough. Man screws length of pipe into socket on end of pipe, held by two large pipe wrenches. A man turns far end of pipe. The pipe is tightened in the socket using the pipe wrench, before coating the joint liberally with bitumen. The caterpillar tractor driver is directed to back his machine and plough towards a man holding the end of some pipe, which has a pulling eye screwed into it. The pipe disappears into the end of a trench at the bottom of a narrow ploughed slit in the soil. Caterpillar tractor drive across field followed by 3 men watching the towed plough. Pipe shown being pulled into end of trench at high speed by plough. Pipe shown on surface being watched by group of skittish cattle as it is pulled across field under wire fence. Factory scene with bundles of pipes being lifted and men controlling the lifting process using overhead levers. The bundles are lowered into successive tanks of liquid, the second of which is steaming or fuming, as the bundle comes out of the liquid, it gushes out of the end of the pipes. Pipes (tubes) are plugged by a man with protective gloves and apron, tightening the plug with a large wrench. Pipes are shown entering a furnace and then 2 men lift one off using tongs and attaching it to a tank containing bitumen. After measured amount of bitumen has been put in pipe, it is lifted by the 2 men on to a rolling machine, which rotates the tube to distribute the bitumen evenly around the inside of the tube. The tubes are moved automatically by the machine to an area where the pipes are sprayed with water to cool them. View from pipe, of woman’s eye looking down rotating shiny bore of pipe. Man in very heavy gauntlets holds pipe fitting with tongs as he ladles bitumen into the fitting. Another man screws a sealing part into a fitting, before carefully tilting the fitting backwards and forwards, he then mounts it on to a machine which rotates multiple fittings to spread the bitumen around the inside of the fittings. Length of pipe rotates on rollers, above a moving bath of bitumen, brushes are used by 2 men to coat the pipe with bitumen. The bath stops and reverses along the pipe, this time the men apply a spiral wrap of glass fibre coating to the pipe coating it liberally with bitumen again, the excess being removed by one of the men with a brush. The men lift the coated pipe into a lime wash and it rolls down to join a row of other pipes. A bundle of coated pipes is lifted with a rope hoist and deposited in front of 2 men who wrap the ends in sacking and paint bands on the ends to indicate the quality and standard of the pipes. A bundle of pipes is wrapped in sacking around the middle – the sacking is joined by sewing with string. Multiple bundles are shown being stacked in the warehouse, all labelled with tie-on labels.
Distant view of farm across fields, with trees and a few cattle. Man shovels soil out of trench by cattle trough. Land Rover pulling trailer carrying small bundle of wrapped pipes drives past trough and man working. Trailer with wooden bed, has bundle of pipes and sack of fittings. 2 men lift off several pipes and place on ground, together with sack of fittings. 2 men in white overalls walk past back of van, which is full of tools and sacks of fittings, pipe is secured on tripod clamp. Man in white overalls unwraps end of pipes and carries one pipe away. Two trenches at right angles with a white pipe in the bottom of one and another is laid in the crossing trench. 2 men lay out lengths of pipe alongside trench to trough. Man walks along in trench, carrying toolbox and sack of pipe fittings, which he puts down beside the trench, before bending down to unscrew a cap from a tee fitting on the pipe in the trench, he applies paste to the tee fitting and to the new pipe end which is then lowered into the trench to screw it into the tee fitting, first by hand and finally tightened with a large pipe wrench. He moves along the trench with his tools, lifts the other end of the pipe on to a supporting batten, checks the thread of this pipe and the one to be screwed into it, adding thread paste to both, before screwing them together by hand and tightening the joint with two pipe wrenches. View of van (Austin ?) and end of trench. Man repeats joint near trough. 2 men walk along trench lowering pipes into bottom of trench. Man cuts into white coating of pipe held in vice, with hacksaw, uses folding wooden ruler to measure, before stripping coating off with knife. Pipe is cut with a hacksaw, while the other man pours water out of kettle to lubricate and cool the cut. Man uses finger to remove metal swarf from cut end of pipe and then uses thread cutting tool to put thread on end of pipe, again using water to lubricate cut. Thread cutting tool shown on stand. Man carries short length of pipe into trench by trough, checks end of loger pipe and smears thread paste on both ends before screwing them together, tightening with 2 pipe wrenches. A pressure gauge is attached to the end of the pipe and a stop cock opened to register water pressure. Man applies paste to bare metal at joint and very sticky wide tape is applied as a spiral wrap over the whole joint area, being finally moulded to the pipe by hand. Process is repeated at several joints. Man in trench demonstrates how transit damage to pipe coating is repaired in similar way using paste and tape. Man in white overalls lowers completed pipe into trench while two other men shovel soil back into trench. Trough shown full of water.
