Synopsis:

Potted history of Russia and China, the two great Communist states, and relationship. Good on political figures, especially Mao Tse Tung.

Mao Tse-Tung greets Khruschev on Chinese soil. Historical overview of Chinese history. Panning shot of ancient ornate pagoda. Great Wall of China. Camel Train makes its way over desert. City streets of unidentified Chinese town. Markets with stall holders selling goods with customers wearing traditional dress mingling. Hordes of Chinese people march and congregate on a large square. Flags are carried and waved. Close up of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, reputedly known as the George Washington of the people. Close up of the statue of Abraham Lincoln in Washington, U.S.A. Funeral of Sun Yat Sen with full military honours and ceremonial display. Chiang Kai-Shek takes over completing the unification of the new Chinese republic. Footage of Chiang Kai-Shek leaving a traditional Chinese dwelling with a young woman and an older colleague. In 1928 he breaks with the Red Army and ousts them from the Government. Large Howitzer-style guns are fired. In 1931, Japan invades China. Japanese troops, with flag prominent, storm up a hill. Dive bombers. Explosions. Scared pedestrians run through streets. Completely destroyed railway platform. Chinese soldiers rush away along the railway tracks. Refugees leave the ruins of their homes and flee over mountains from the Japanese invader. Starving people fight with each other to grasp food being thrown at them. Chiang Kai-Shek in full military uniform gives a speech. Mao Tse-Tung relaxes in front of the camera. Close up of Mao. Chinese and Japanese troops battle it out in city streets. A war plane plummets to the ground. Sphinx. Chiang Kai-Shek relaxes in front of the cameras with Roosevelt and Churchill in Cairo. Their is no Russian representative because they have struck an alliance with Mao Tse-Tung. Japanese officers sign papers of surrender in 1945. Post war China with starving people. Chinese communists with arms supplied by the Russians. Victorious Chinese communists walk into Shanghai and on the top of tanks. Mao Tse-tung salutes a row of Howitzers. Chiang Kai-Shek forced to flee after overthrow of his government. His partner Madame Chiang reads out a prophetic statement in English, "Russia will never know one day of peace in China, Russia will never own China".

Parade on October 1st 1949. The birth of the Chinese Communist Republic is attended by Mao Tse-Tung. Mao arrives at Moscow Airport and is greeted by Khruschev. Mao gives a speech at the airport. He and Khruschev sign a thirty year treaty of friendship. Chinese industrial planners are seen commuting between Moscow and Peking to seek and to receive technical aid and financial help. Demonstration of industrial achievements and machinery. Chinese cotton mills fully mechanised with money from Russia. Chinese oil derricks. The Kremlin, Moscow 1956. Khruschev denounces Stalin and speaks of the peaceful co-existence between the free and communist worlds. In Peking, the initial reaction is restrained. Mao casts a vote as do his workers. Massive explosion. The commune system is instigated which abolishes the family set up. All activities are conducted in military formation and directed by the sound of a bugle. Workers in fields dig and hoe. Commune members are even buried beneath the paddy fields to enrich the land. The lack of modern technology is made up for with the use of massive amounts of human labour. Farm and commune labour suffer badly with millions of people crippled or killed because of overwork, accidents, exposure and disease. Steel mills. Back yards mills. Chinese troops marching up a hill being sent amongst other places to Tibet, Laos, Vietnam, India. Red Chinese scientists work on the cone of a nuclear reactor. Speeches denouncing Mao Tse Tung are made. Chinese communist plenary. 1963 Moscow. Russians propose proposals fr discussion of a nuclear test ban. Present at discussions: Dean Rusk, United States' Secretary of State. Andrei Gromyko, Foreign Minister for Russia. Lord Home, foreign secretary for Greta Britain. When the ceremony is completed, there is applause. Edward Heath appears briefly in shot. Mao Tse Tung denounces both Russia and the United States. Massive parade in Peking.
