Synopsis:

1) "President Pompidou" speaks to the nation six months after being elected. Views of the Elysees Palace before close up of Pompidou seated and speaking on international policy (including the Hague Conference concerning Britain's entry into Europe).
2) "L'Education Sentimentale" Celebration of the 100th anniversary (1869 - 1969) of 'Sentimental Education' by Gustave Flaubert. Close up of book and old engravings telling the story (a reflection on the passions of love and the revolution of 1848). Engravings cut with contemporary footage taken in Paris: present state of illustrated buildings, student riots, lifestyle and fashion.
Interviews with intellectuals: Menie Gregoire (psychologist), Louis de Vilmorin (woman of letters) and Felicien Marceau(winner of the Prix Goncourt 1969). Clip from Louis Malle film "The Lovers." Old woman at the hairdressers gives her comment on students today. Clip from Francois Truffaut film "Stolen Kisses." Interview with Phillipe Labro (film-maker and journalist); clip from one of his films. Student life today: in the dance club, in the street, in an apartment and putting on a theatrical production of Romeo and Juliet.
